Any boy that hasn’t really grown up has been waiting for this for a long time. After He-Man, Spiderman, Superman and just about every hero imaginable had been brought to live on the big screen we were beginning to wonder if it would ever happen.
On July 27th we’re finally going to get to see whether it has been worth the wait. Some people are certainly excited about it, searching "transformers movie" on Youtube provides over 10,500 videos. Many of these are about the cartoon series, but more are about the live action film. From official trailers through to reviews of the new toys, there are even spoof trailers.
The only trouble is, with this level of fanboy enthusiasm director Michael Bay is bound to disappoint some people. I’ve seen posts complaining that Optimus Prime is going to be a long nosed truck and not a flat cab. They want the flat cab because that is what they grew up with! How do you make a 50 foot tall robot fold out from a short cab? It’s got to be slightly believable.
Many boys have grown up with Transformers. There were the original cartoons, then the New Transformers, then Beast Wars, Armada and probably more that I’ve forgotten. Like James Bond or Doctor Who everyone has their favourite, often the one that they watched as a child.
Watching the trailer I have been impressed with the way that the film looks. Unlike the Citroen advert which looks great, but doesn’t really say much about the car, the Transformers plot looks to be engaging as well as looking stunning.
With Michael Bay, the director of Armageddon, (now there’s a claim to fame!) at the helm and Stephen Spielberg as a co-producer, this film should be, at the very least, impressive.
