The picture on this DVD cover is rare. Rich Hall is actually smiling, he doesn't really do smiling all that much, at least not from all the TV series that I have seen with him in.
As stand-ups go Rich is one of the most conservative when it comes to his movement and enthusiasm on stage. However his act is based on his dour outlook on life. However he is not the same as Jack Dee, there is a definite difference in style. Of course Rich likes to play with the audience as many comedians do. Like Dara O'Briain he manages to work some of these conversations throughout the remainder of the show, which means that each time you see them it is unique.
However some of the other stuff isn't unique. You know that already of course, this is a show that they do for months, sometimes even years and routines get repeated. This kind of performance though is a one-off thing and it's the comedian and the audience and they will always have that unique moment, that is the magic of Stand-Up. So why in the extra's did the DVD producer add a stand-up performance from "Live at the Apollo" where we have some of the same stories repeated as on the main show? This completely destroys the illusion and also someone should have thought, who wants to watch the same routine at 2 different performances? A bit of poor judgement on someone's part!
The first half of the show is Rich talking to the audience. However the second half is Otis Lee Crenshaw, Rick's country music singing redneck alter-ego. There are some fairly rude and raucous, but entertaining and funny songs in the second half that are well performed. In between songs "Otis" chats to the audience, also continuing to repeat jokes from the first half (so I guess he was watching from the wings!!) which is always funny.
As you would expect this DVD is rated a 15 because of the bad language and sexual references. Most of the references came in the second half of the DVD, a lot of them in the songs. This is a funny DVD and despite the references and swears it certainly isn't the filthiest stand-up routine in the world, I would even say that Michael McIntyre was cruder than Rich Hall. I was surprised how much I enjoyed his show because I haven't always enjoyed him on TV programmes when I have seen him.
